Ziggy Stardust is a song written by David Bowie and included in their album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Lyrics

Ohh, yeah
Ziggy played guitar, jammin’ good with Weird and Gilly
And the Spiders from Mars, he played it left hand
But made it too far
Became the special man, then we were Ziggy’s band

Ziggy really sang, screwed up eyes and screwed down hairdo
Like some cat from Japan, he could lick ’em by smiling
He could leave ’em to hang
They came on so loaded man, well hung and snow white tan

So where were the Spiders?
While the fly tried to break our balls
Just a beer light to guide us
So we bitched about his fans, and should we crush his sweet hands?

Ziggy played for time, jiving us that we were voodoo
The kids were just crass, he was the nazz
With God given ass
He took it all too far, but boy could he play guitar

Making love with his ego
Ziggy sucked up into his mind
Like a leper Messiah
When the kids had killed the man I had to break up the band

Ohh, yeah
Ziggy played guitar

Ziggy Stardust – David Bowie – Meaning

Ziggy is a character invented by David Bowie, and that uses reference to some musician and rockstar that David admires and loves.

So Ziggy is a mix between an alien and a rockstar, and all the album is about his story here on earth and about a Starman that comes to help humanity.

In this song, Ziggy Stardust have some problem  with the other members of the band and with his fans.

Ziggy played guitar, jammin’ good with Weird and Gilly
And the Spiders from Mars, he played it left hand
But made it too far
Became the special man, then we were Ziggy’s band

The spiders from Mars was the band of Ziggy Stardust.

He plays really well and was the most talented.

He plays the guitar with his left hand, that is a tribute to the legend of guitar Jimi Hendrix.

The problems come when he become too good and too popular.

And start to be the special man of the band.

The real frontman.

Nobody really paid attention to the other members of the band.

And The Spiders From Mars become the Ziggy’s band.

Like some cat from Japan, he could lick ’em by smiling

Here the band member who talks, can see the real power of a real rockstar.

And Ziggy Stardust is a real rockstar.

He liked people. He talks and plays for people.

He can influence them.

Everyone love him.

His power is so big that he can destroy a person just by smiling him.

Here the cats from japan, that have the power to communicate and to lick to someone just by smiling at it, is a powerful image.

Is the state of a rockstar, that David Bowie knows really well.

So where were the Spiders?
While the fly tried to break our balls
Just a beer light to guide us
So we bitched about his fans, and should we crush his sweet hands?

The future of the band is not clear.

The future of the other members of the band is not clear.

Everyone loves Ziggy and nobody see them, or gives them any credits.

But the band wants to punish Ziggy.

The best way is by crush his hands.

In this way he can’t play guitar and can’t be the Special Man.

Jiving us that we were voodoo
The kids were just crass, he was the nazz

Ziggy Stardust tries to placate the mood of the band, minimizing the real power of himself, and of the fans.

Trying to do this, he say that the real power of the band is in the magic of the hands of the full band.

That the kids, the fans, are not important for him.

And that the fact that they love him, is not real meaning for the success of the band.

Making love with his ego
Ziggy sucked up into his mind
Like a leper Messiah
When the kids had killed the man I had to break up the band

But betraying the love of the fans for him, Ziggy Stardust makes his end.

Here the killing of the man can be intended literally or just a metaphor.

The fact is that the rockstar end his story and fall.

And the other members must broke up the band.

Conclusion

The classic story of every rockstar. Starts with a band, but when the things start to go well, the frontman becomes the real star. How often this happens in the history of music?
