Something in the way is a song  written by Kurt Cobain and recorded by Nirvana in their album Nevermind. This song talk about the hard life of Kurt when he got kicked out of the house where he lived and he started to stay under a bridge for sometime. In that sam period, Cobain write Lithium, another great song that talks about the lonlyness, and some sympthome of depression.
This was only a legend, because like i read on the biography of Kurt “Hevier than Heaven”, the truth is that he sleep all that nights at the houses of some of his friends.

Lyrics

Underneath the bridge
The tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals I’ve trapped
Have all become my pets
And I’m living off of grass
And the drippings from the ceiling
But it’s okay to eat fish
‘Cause they don’t have any feelings

Something in the way
Ummmmm
Something in the way, yeah
Ummmmm

Underneath the bridge
The tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals I’ve trapped
Have all become my pets
And I’m living off of grass
And the drippings from the ceiling
But it’s okay to eat fish
‘Cause they don’t have any feelings

Something in the way
Ummmmm
Something in the way, yeah
Ummmmm
Something in the way

Something in the way – Nirvana – Meaning

This song was recorded in a weird way. In the first Kurt wants to record the song with the full band.

But after that Butch Vig hear the song for the first time, he ask to Kurt to record the song in a really simple and minimalistic way.

Only voice and guitar. With a more intimate mood.

Butch need to shut off the conditioners and all the telephones, because Kurt sing really with a low volume.

But in this way he made a great interpretation of tha song. That is what we can hear in the album.

 Underneath the bridge
Tarp has sprung a leak

Cobain claimed that he briefly lived underneath a bridge over the Wishkah river in Aberdeen after dropping out of high school and his mother’s subsequent ultimatum that he find work or move out.

The lyrics to this song were spray painted by Cobain on the wall of the bridge that he lived under when he left his home. It was later painted over in a clean up of the city.

 And the animals I’ve trapped
Have all become my pets

Kurt always liked docile pets throughout his life, especially turtles. He start to trapped animals to keep as pets in this period of his life.something in the way-the bridge- planck machine

And I’m living off of grass
And the drippings from my ceiling

From the ceiling of the bridge, dripping of water fall in the mouth of Kurt. He drink in this way. And maybe he eat grass. But for me is only an exaggeration. A lot of strange tales we can found about this period of the life of Cobain.

Someone are true, but the most are only legends.

 It’s okay to eat fish
Cause they don’t have any feelings

The astrological sign of Kurt was Pisces. So here we can found a way to talk about himself, and the deepest level of degradation where he lives at that time. And the reference to the Catholic way to understand the Friday like a day when you can’t eat meat, but for some strange reasons, you can eat fish.

The absence of feelings in fishes, are a way to give a sort of apologies for the people that let him alone. In his loneliness and darkness. Seem like if the fault is only of Kurt.

I see some great depressions symptom.

 Something in the way, mmm
Something in the way, yeah, mmm

Kurt felt as if he was always “in the way”. Like if he know that the time he passed under that bridge was only a little time in his life. But the deep sadness that he found inside himself was a thing that remain with him for the rest of his life.

When Butch Vig was in his studio to record this song, he had some big problem to mix the voice of Kurt, because he sing in a very whispered way. And he take this version for the great interpretation that Kurt made.
