One is a great song written by U2 for the album Achtung Baby, released in the 1992.
Just after that the wall of Berlin came down, the band goes to the german city, hoping that the new spirit of reunification can help the band to start a new project for a new album in a moment of division between the members of  U2.

Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. wants the old and secure sound of the past albums of the band. Bono and The Edge instead wants to find a new sound, with influence from the electronic and dance music scene that come from the europe. This difference of view leads to the energy needed to write a great song like this.

One is a song that was written during some jamming for the writing sessions of the song Mysterous Ways.

The Edge says about that magic moment:
Suddenly something very powerful happening in the room. Everyone recognized it was a special piece. It was like we’d caught a glimpse of what the song could be.

Lyrics

Is it getting better?
Or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you now?
You got someone to blame

You say, one love, one life
When it’s one need in the night
One love, we get to share it
Leaves you baby if you don’t care for it

Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without

Well it’s too late tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We’re one but we’re not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other
One!

Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus?
To the lepers in your head

Did I ask too much? More than a lot
You gave me nothin’ now it’s all I got
We’re one but we’re not the same
Well we hurt each other then we do it again

You say love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law
You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl
And I can’t be holdin’ on to what you got
When all you got is hurt

One love, one blood
One life, you got to do what you should
One life, with each other
Sisters, brothers

One life but we’re not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other
One
One

One – U2 – Meaning

One is a song about love. In many different ways. In a difference of context.

The concept of separation and of the reunification is at the core of this song.

We can see some different layers of meanings inside the words.

The first and most clear is the relationship between two lovers. Where the separation leads to the pains, but leads a sort of amplified awareness.

Yes this love not works anymore, but i understand the real power and meaning of love. A way to understand a big piece of all our lifes.

It’s something that i will use only in the future.

The core of the meaning is the concept of unity.

We are one. Our love is one. We can share it.

We can share our love, because it’s an entity that can’t be taken. And that can’t be given.

We’re one, but we’re not the same

But this concept of Oneness is not the same as the communities of hyppies sometime reads in this lines.

Bono don’t like the way of thinking of hyppies. He want to thinking about love like one thing between different people.

Yes. We share love and a lot of other things. But everyone of us is a person. An individual element. With all his power and singularity.

The flat view where everyone is the same as everyone else, it’s not real. It’s not true.

Real love means real meeting of the others.

Be all equals is not love.

Because in deep, someone must adapt to someone else.

One love, one blood, one life, you got to do what you should
One life with each other: sisters, brothers
One life, but we’re not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other
One, one

Another interesting interpretation fo the song, is related to the use of One for a charity campaign to help the research against AIDS.

It seems like as if it were a father that talk to his son, positive to HIV.

This is related to the cover of the single too.

Pushed into the unknown by forces we cannot control or even understand.

The cover of the single of ONE.

The cover of the single of ONE.

Conclusion

One is a big piece of the history of the pop music of our time. Is an imn to life, love and to the concept of to be one only thing that live this earth.

We get to carry each other.

Leave a comment or a different vision of the meaning of this song if you want.
