Lyrics

Transport, motorways and tramlines
Starting and then stopping
Taking off and landing
The emptiest of feelings
Disappointed people clinging on to bottles
And when it comes it’s so so disappointing

Let down and hanging around
Crushed like a bug in the ground
Let down and hanging around

Shell smashed, juices flowing
Wings twitch, legs are going
Don’t get sentimental
It always ends up drivel

One day I’m going to grow wings
A chemical reaction
Hysterical and useless
Hysterical and

Let down and hanging around
Crushed like a bug in the ground
Let down and hanging around

Let down again
Let down again
Let down again

You know, you know where you are with
You know where you are with
Floor collapsing
Floating, bouncing back

And one day
I am going to grow wings
A chemical reaction
Hysterical and useless
Hysterical and

Let down and hanging around
Crushed like a bug in the ground
Let down and hanging around

Let Down – Radiohead – Meaning

Tom Yorke said about this song:

Sentimentality is being emotional for the sake of it. We’re bombarded with sentiment, people emoting. That’s the Let Down. Feeling every emotion is fake. Or rather every emotion is on the same plane whether it’s a car advert or a pop song.

And Jonny Greenwood adds:

Andy Warhol once said that he could enjoy his own boredom. ‘Let Down’ is about that. It’s the transit-zone feeling. You’re in a space, you are collecting all these impressions, but it all seems so vacant. You don’t have control over the earth anymore. You feel very distant from all these thousands of people that are also walking there.

  Transport, motorways and tramlines
Starting and then stopping
Taking off and landing
The emptiest of feelings
Disappointed people clinging on to bottles
And when it comes it’s so so disappointing

The things that are completely unremarkable.

Business, money, and all the things that people do for them.

Something without value.

Emotional value.

Letting down the sentiments, and the feelings that we have inside us.

Arts and music are the basic elements that we as humans need to make something filled with value.

And the delusion that comes when you find out that to nobody really matters of the things that you create.

Interesting is the way that Radiohead intend the words hanging on to bottles:

I was pissed in a club, and I suddenly had the funniest thought I’d had for ages.

What if all the people who were drinking were hanging from the bottles… if the bottles were hung from the ceiling with string, and the floor caved in, and the only thing that kept everyone up was the bottles?

It’s also about an enormous fear of being trapped.

  Let down and hanging around
Crushed like a bug in the ground
Let down and hanging around

The bug was crushed.

He don’t have power to control whatever happened to him.

There was a higher power that decides.

Maybe this power can thought that the bug don’t have value.

That he don’t mean anything.

The power has took his life.

His personality.

And his individuality.

The bug is left vulnerable.

There is nothing else he can do.

The power has took all of his potential.

All his freedom.

That in the end is the most important thing.

  Shell smashed, juices flowing
Wings twitch, legs are going
Don’t get sentimental
It always ends up drivel

The bug is crashed.

He hang around.

He starts to die.

But he remain alive.

And can watch himself come apart.

Like humans.

That they call living this type of life.

Where everyone stay down.

At his place.

The right place builded for him.

Perfectly fitted.

The human race has become this.

Living in this new technology infused society.

One day I’m going to grow wings
A chemical reaction
Hysterical and useless
Hysterical and

In this words we can find a view that adds more to the sentimentality of this song.

The initial tone of this lyric is a little optimistic.

The false hope that he can fly away in some way.

Maybe some day in the future.

But here he realizes that his dream is just useless.

Hysterical.

And completely without hope.

He has been let down a lot of times in life.

So he don’t expects that the things will change for the better.

You know, you know where you are with
You know where you are with
Floor collapsing
Floating, bouncing back

It’s hard to define who you are.

And where you are.

In life.

Everybody thinks that they have control.

but this is not true.

We live in a limbo.

Where things can be broken, change and come back to the start.

Multiple times during our entire life.

The security is useless.

Because can’t be reached.

Everything change costantly.

This is the world.

This is the life.

Living for real, means start to accept this law.

Our strong and solid certainties, are without any value.

The great things that we can create, are made only while we swim the life without fears.

The fears that give us the need for our certainties.

Conclusion

A big piece inside Ok Computer. One of my favorite songs of all time. The sadness and the dramatic sound. But with little bit of hope that we can feel on the background. I love it.
