Hysteria is a song written by Muse and included in their album Absolution.
Chris Wolstenholme about this song said :
Hysteria was the second single we did in the UK [from Absolution] and I also think it is the next single that is going to be released in America. We always felt with that track was that it was very good track to open a gig with. It is just one of those tracks that is a simple song but has an immediate effect. It was one of those tracks that grabs attention from people. I think for that reason we chose to open the set with that. It is just a good, rocking track.

Lyrics

It’s bugging me, grating me
And twisting me around
Yeah, I’m endlessly caving in
And turning inside out

‘Cause I want it now, I want it now
Give me your heart and your soul
And I’m breaking out, I’m breaking out
Last chance to lose control

It’s holding me, morphing me
And forcing me to strive
To be endlessly cold within
And dreaming I’m alive

‘Cause I want it now, I want it now
Give me your heart and your soul
I’m not breaking down, I’m breaking out
Last chance to lose control

And I want you now, I want you now
I’ll feel my heart implode
And I’m breaking out, escaping now
Feeling my faith erode

Hysteria – Muse – Meaning

About this song, Matt Bellamy said:

The song Hysteria it’s just about desire something you can’t have and some kind of narrative that’s about. Something like that, you know, personal, you know, the obssession of have something they can’t have, whoever may be so frustrates. Stalking across a shield or something like that. Kind of being in love with something can’t actually get yourself, you know.

But with the videoclip, we understand that it’s a story about a guy who stalks a girl that he wants really badly.

He finds out that she is a prostitute, he invites her to his hotel room and attacks her.

  It’s bugging me, grating me
And twisting me around Yeah,
I’m endlessly caving in
And turning inside out

The obsession with something, is a real physical pain.

You need to stay near the object of your obsession.

You want to own it.

You want that it must be your.

The pain of the absence can be really strong and generate hard feelings like the Muse describe in their song.

Here this illness, is referenced to a man that wants a girl.

‘Cause I want it now, I want it now
Give me your heart and your soul
And I’m breaking out, I’m breaking out
Last chance to lose control

Here in the chorus, we can see what happens inside the mind of the protagonist.

The only thing that really matters to him, is to have the subject of the obsession.

The definition of the Hysteria, can help us to understand:

an uncontrollable outburst of emotion or fear, often characterized byirrationality, laughter, weeping, etc.

And in Psychoanalisys:

a psychoneurotic disorder characterized by violentemotional outbreaks, disturbances of sensory and motor functions, andvarious abnormal effects due to autosuggestion.

But more interesting is another definition:

Hysteria was originally a now-defunct psychoanalytical diagnosis particularly afflicted to females, akin to sexual frustration. The treatment consisted of a massage of the genitals leading to “hysterical paroxysm”, or what is now known as the female orgasm. It later came to mean overwhelming fear, panic or emotional excess, or alternatively, a mental disorder that is without an organic cause. Hysteria is sometimes referred to as “the slyest reference to a female orgasm in a rock song

  It’s holding me, morphing me
And forcing me to strive
To be endlessly cold within
And dreaming I’m alive

Doing things you know are wrong.

But doing it anyway for self fulfillment.

Knowing that you are wrong, leads to lonelyness.

Not looking at long time effects of what you’re doing.

Knowing that all the things that you do are controlled by a pure and animal desire of someone.

All this things can lead you to another place.

To another state of mind that changes you.

Change you as a person.

And I’m breaking out, escaping now
Feeling my faith erode

The last words of the song, leave us with more meaning about the song.

That Feeling my faith erode, tells us that the men have the desire and ambition to evolve.

And to quit this obsession.

But he knows that is not simple.

He thinks that is not possible.

Being loved is not enough.

Stay in a relationship, with happyness and freedom.

Is hard to find.

But is more hard to stay there.

Because everybody want more.

And more.

Satiate yourself, is the first thing.

But is more and more difficult.

And this is the start for a new obsession.

Conclusion

A powerful song with a great videoclip. And with the sixth best bass line of all time, this song is always a great start for every live performance of the band.
