High Hopes is a song created by Pink Floyd and included in the album The Division Bell.
This was the first song written for this album, but was the last one finished too. And was the last single released from  him.
The band thought that The division bell was theyr last album. But this is not true.
From the sessions of recordings for this album, they published the real last album: The endless river.
The title for that last album is the last words of this song, that is the last song of The division bell too.
For me this will be the last song of Pink Floyd. Forever and ever.

Lyrics

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun

Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut

There was a ragged band that Followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The nights of wonder

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide

At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world

Encumbered forever by desire any ambition
There’s a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we’ve been so many times

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river
Forever and ever

High hopes – Pink Floyd – Meaning

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun

All start when magnets were miracles.
All start when we were only kids.
When the world is a new things for us.
When the mind and the genius of this children was free.

But all things go wrong when the bells of the division start to ring.
The division of adults.
The innocence of children is lost when growing, they can form opinions.
Different opinions become people divided.

Seems like if to David Gilmour doesn’t like the way these things happen.
When he was young maybe he have high hopes that life don’t respect.

We can see more of this in another song too. I refer to Shine on you crazy diamond.

Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut

Maybe Longroad and the Causeway was real places in Cambridge, that was Gilmoure’s hometown.
He ask if people that remain there, while he go away to reach his dream, stay there now.
The Cut happens when Gilmour leave his hometown to follow is career in music.

There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay

If you don’t accomplish your dreams soon, you will get weighed down by the responsibilities of the adults life, like family, job and money debt. All this  social pressures try to tie the child to the ground.
Essentially, all start when we are put in school. All dreams slowly disappear, and we start a fight with the world.

But the life proceed inesorably in this way for everyone. And the slow decay starts. And is hard to resiste to him.
A reference to Gulliver’s Travels, in which Gulliver is tied to the ground by Lilliputians, a big numbers of miniature, “small creatures”.

 The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The nights of wonder

When we were young all things were simple. And this way to be simple, made all things beautiful and with a shine and purity that we remember in this way for the rest of our life.
The green fields where we ran were greener that the fields of grass that we see now. The colors were more intense and vivid.

And the light. Oh, the light don’t seems the same light. The light was a lot more brighter that this. The sun is different in this days.
And the best things of that times, were the friends. The people that make all that things really important. My friends were like me. And i was like them. This is the best part.
The real important thought.

And the nights. The special places when we can be completely ourself. When we were free. Really completely free. Like our minds. To discover, to explore and to wonder. When the world show to us the best things.

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide

The world was beautiful in the past. In our youth. And aging, is inevitable. You can remember the past and feel that everything was better. But you know that you can have only a glimpse of how it was.

The life continue. Something is growing. Inside of us. You can continue to dream and take steps towards the freedom of our youth.
But is not the same type of freedom. The purity of our youth can’t come back again completely. You can be close to that feeling. But our aging process make ourself really different.

We are unable to be free like we were in our youth.

At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world

How beautiful was be young. We were really free. And we can reach a higher altitude with our mind, Because our thoughts were free. With all the power that we can have, and with all the flags unfurled, because we were proud of ourself.

Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There’s a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we’ve been so many times

The desire and ambition are forever a costant company in the human being. Is inside our nature. The progress of umanity depends in great part by this two feelings.

They seem so tremendous, but they become temible only when they lead to the drak side of humanity.

Is a constant process in our lifes. Is our nature to want more, and want to become more.

We watch the horizon forever. We explore the deepest ocean and the farest star. We want to know more. Is our nature.

And we know that is hard. But we must do it.

Maybe Gilmour talk about High Hopes too, because is the last song of this that they think be their last album.

 The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river
Forever and ever

Again here Gilmour talks about his youth. But he talks a little more and say that life is like a river. The flow go only in one direction. Forever and ever.

This is how our life works. We can’t change this.

Conclusion

This is the best of all possible worlds”. Voltaire writes this in his novel Candide: or, The Optimist (1762).

We can think up different worlds, but they wouldn’t be plausible. Everything is in balance here and now. So life is what it is. And it will always be this way.
