Come as you are is the song that the management of Nirvana wants like the main single from the album Nevermind. But the great surprise for the success of Smell like teen spirit leave this song down.

The meaning of Come as you are is more philosophical than the others lyrics written by Kurt Cobain. The pureness of the image that we show to the world is a way to live. Living outside the boxes and without the need for all the labels that our society imposes to us in a diffeent way to do things.

Go deeply inside every word of this beautiful song here below.

Lyrics

Come as you are, as you were
As I want you to be
As a friend, as a friend
As an old enemy

Take your time, hurry up
The choice is yours, don’t be late
Take a rest as a friend
As an old

Memoria, memoria
Memoria, memoria

Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach
As I want you to be
As a trend, as a friend
As an old

Memoria, memoria
Memoria, memoria

And I swear that I don’t have a gun
No I don’t have a gun
No I don’t have a gun

Memoria, memoria
Memoria, memoria
(No I don’t have a gun)

And I swear that I don’t have a gun
No I don’t have a gun
No I don’t have a gun
No I don’t have a gun
No I don’t have a gun

Memoria, memoria

Come as you are – Nirvana – Meaning

Come as you are, as you were
As I want you to be
As a friend, as a friend
As a known enemy

Come as you are. This is the best statement that Kurt Cobain  can give to us.

The difference between the way we are, or we were, and the way the society would that we be.

This is the problem for all that generation. The heart of grunge is all in this words.

Give an image to the society is not what the youngs of that time wants.

Sacrifice the truth. Be someone else. Someone that we don’t want to be.

This was ( and is ) not acceptable for  them ( and maybe for us).

Is a way of thinking that remain really valuable in this days too.

But after the first line all the things turn more personally.

And Nirvana start to talks about friends and enemies.

When a friend can seems an enemy and viceversa.

Maybe referring to the statement of Niccolò Macchiavelli:

Keep friends close, but enemies closer.

 Take your time, hurry up
The choice is yours, don’t be late
Take a rest as a friend, as an old memoria

The incitations to think about life continue.

Here the center of all is the time, and the choices that everyone in his life need to do.

We can go slow, taking all the time taht we think taht we need.

Or we can go fast. Hurry up. when we think that we don’t have enough time, or we want or need to do more things in less time.

But the problem, and the solution is one.

Make a choice. Is not really important what is the choice that you made.

The thing that is really important is that you made that choice.

You can choice the fast way.

Or you can choice the slow way.

But made this choice right now.

Don’t be late and do that damned choice now.

Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach
As I want you to be
As a trend, as a friend
As a known enemy yeah

This is a request for more intimacy in the life of Kurt.

Is not really important how you come.

Is important that you are true.

The first line was a slogan anti-heroin used in Seattle in the 1990.

So is a theme really important for Kurt. But here he use that phrase to a way to request a real friendship to someone.

Yes. Because after that Nirvana become really famous, is more hard to trust in someone that come to you and want to be your friend.

Is for you? In the meaning of the person?

Or in the meaning of a trend?

And if the trend end? What happens to all that people?

People that are around you when the things go well.

But if something go wrong?

They stay there too?

Or become enemies?

 And I swear that I don’t have a gun
No I don’t have a gun

Here is really hard to know if the gun is metaphorical or is material.

All that people that come to him like friends, but that can discovered like enemies.

They can be safe for him?

Or he must start to think about his life.

All that people can lead to more problems.

When in reality he want only a more simple life with the real friends and his family.

So he need a gun?

Really?

He don’t want a gun, but at the end is with a fire weapon that he suicide.

Sadly ironic.

Conclusion

After all this was a great song that lead Nirvana to the mainstream. Is a song with a clear peaceful meaning.
