Beautiful Day is a song written by U2 and included in their album All That You Can’t Leave Behind.
For the recordings of All That You Can’t Leave Behind, the band wants to distance themselves from their 1990s sound. Leaving the electronic dance music in favour of a “return to the traditional U2 sound”.
But the searching for a more modern sound, leads the band to debate about the tone of the guitar used for this song. They wants to use some tones from their early materials for the album War recorded in 1983.
The Edge wins the debate and explains the reason in this way:
It was because we were coming up with some innovative music that I felt a license to use some signature guitar sounds.
While the band wants to establish a more conventional sound, one of the song’s breakthroughs is due to the work made by the co-producer Brian Eno that provided “electronification of the chords with a beat box” and modifying the beginning with a synthesised string part.
Other changes made by Bono with a new guitar part and a little change in the line of bass, turn this song in:
one of those little gifts where you think, my god, we’ve got it!

Lyrics

The heart is a bloom
Shoots up through stony ground
But there’s no room
No space to rent in this town

You’re out of luck
And the reason that you had to care
The traffic is stuck
And you’re not moving anywhere

You thought you’d found a friend
To take you out of this place
Someone you could lend
A hand in return for grace

It’s a beautiful day, the sky falls
And you feel like it’s a beautiful day
It’s a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away

You’re on the road
But you’ve got no destination
You’re in the mud
In the maze of her imagination

You love this town
Even if that doesn’t ring true
You’ve been all over
And it’s been all over you

It’s a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away
It’s a beautiful day

Touch me
Take me to that other place
Teach me love
I know I’m not a hopeless case

See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out

See the Bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
See the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colors came out

It was a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away
A beautiful day

Touch me
Take me to that other place
Reach me
I know I’m not a hopeless case

What you don’t have
You don’t need it now
What you don’t know
You can feel it somehow

What you don’t have
You don’t need it now
You don’t need it now

It was a beautiful day

Beautiful Day – U2 – Meaning

The main meaning of the song was explained by Bono: losing everything but still finding joy in what one has.

Just like a flower can survive and maybe thrive in inhospitable conditions, the human spirit cannot be smothered, and can even persevere in hard times.

You thought you’d found a friend
To take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand
In return for grace

Yes. The life is hard, and we don’t have space and room and everyday is the same as the previous and the next days. But this is the life we live.

We need something. Some little thing.

Like a friend.

So that is a beautiful day. A day where you are not alone. A day that you don’t let it get away.

See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the Bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colors came out

When seen from the space, the Earth still looks like a beautiful green and blue jewel.

Even the cities that seem grey and lifeless. And the problems may not be as bad as you think.

From the space you can see the China’s wall, the bedouin’s fire that lights up the night.

And everything is easy. Is ok. And beautiful. Like the little bird that leads an olive branch to Noah.

A sign that say that the war between God and men was terminated, and that the lands start to come back again.

What you don’t have you don’t need it now
What you don’t know you can feel it somehow
What you don’t have you don’t need it now
Don’t need it now
Was a beautiful day

At the end we find the real meaning of the song.

Bono here invites everyone to be happy and realize that it’s a beautiful day despite what you may not have.

It is human nature to look at and desire the things we don’t have.

But the life is one, and we must start to live it in a more simple and authentic way.

Conclusion

A commitment. Every moment is a chance to start a new way to do things. A new way to live. And a new way to love. Life is more easy than we are used to think about it.
