Bad is a song written by U2 in the early ’80 and included in their album The Unforgettable Fire.

This was a special song for the band, because reflects the deep frustration that the problem of drug’s addiction gives to all the young people that lived in the ’80.

Bad is a song about drugs. About addiction at every level. But more specifically heroin addiction.

In the ’80, Ireland and a lot of other countries in Europe have a big problem with Heroin. In Ireland, a deep economic crisis, creates the perfect social background for the epidemic diffusion of the use and abuse of heroin and a lot of other drugs.

Lyrics

If you twist and turn away
If you tear yourself in two again
If I could, yes I would
If I could, I would, let it go
Surrender, dislocate

If I could throw this lifeless lifeline to the wind
Leave this heart of clay, see you walk, walk away
Into the night and through the rain
Into the half-light and through the flame

If I could through myself, set your spirit free
I’d lead your heart away
See you break, break away
Into the lights and to the day

Ooh, ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh

To let it go and so to fade away
To let it go and so fade away
I’m wide awake, I’m wide awake
Wide awake, I’m not sleeping, oh no, no, no

If you should ask then maybe they’d
Tell you what I would say
True colors fly in blue and black
Bruised silken sky and burnin’ flag
Colors crash, collide in blood shot eyes

If I could, you know I would
If I could, I would, let it go
This desperation, dislocation
Separation, condemnation
Revelation in temptation
Isolation, desolation

Let it go and so fade away
To let it go and so fade away
To let it go and so to fade away
I’m wide awake, I’m wide awake
Wide awake, I’m not sleeping, oh no, no, no

Bad – U2 – Meaning

All the lyrics in Bad are really abstract and ethereal. Bono don’t gives us a clear identification of the narrator.
The words can comes from the people that are addicted to the drugs. Or sometime can seem that U2 uses the voice of a loved one that sees drugs that carry away people.

The sorrow and the great sense of impotence that a situation like this gives to all the people that lived around the addicted man, is a big emotional statement, that Bono insert in the song in different moments.

The addicted does not wants that the people that try to help him, follow him in the darkness of his existence. He try to stay alone in the dark of the abuse of drugs.

Bono uses the power of his music and of this song, to give to the world a clear view of the dramatic life that a lot of people of his generation lived.

And at the end of Bad the clear intention is to stay awake.

To try to stay focused about the problem.

To not sleeping.

To be wide awake.
