Lyrics

How come I end up where I started?
How come I end up where I went wrong?
Won’t take my eyes off the ball again
You reel me out then you cut the string

How come I end up where I started?
How come I end up where I went wrong?
I won’t take my eyes off the ball again
First you reel me out and then you cut the string

You used to be alright
What happened?
Did the cat get your tongue?
Did your string come undone?

One by one
One by one
It comes to us all
It’s as soft as your pillow

You used to be alright
What happened
Et cetera, et cetera
Facts for whatever
Fifteen steps
Then a sheer drop

How come I end up where I started?
How can I end up where I went wrong?
Won’t take my eyes off the ball again
You reel me out and you cut the string

15 Step – Radiohead – Meaning

How come I end up where I started?
How come I end up where I went wrong?

It’s a song about love and betrayal. as well as the repetition of failed pursuits.

Thom Yorke said about this song and in general about this album:

It’s about the fucking panic of realising you’re going to die!

And that any time soon I could possibly have a heart attack when I next go for a run.”

How we can make the same mistakes again and again.

Why we waste our time doing things that are not so importants?

Why  we spend our precious time with people without any real value for us and for our story here on the earth?

Won’t take my eyes off the ball again
You reel me out then you cut the string

I made a lot of mistakes.

But the best.

The most big mistake that i made is to trust you.

Trusting you, i don’t see things.

If i trust you i know that i can do other things, without control you and your actions all the time.

This is trust.

But you use my trust in you against me.

You hide something to me, distracting me with something else.

When i trust you. When i completely trust you.

In that precise moment, you cut the string.

Doing something wrong.

Betraying me.

  You used to be alright
What happened?
Did the cat get your tongue?
Did your string come undone?

Here Thom talks with the betrayer.

Asking if everything is ok now that he discovers his actions.

This words, seem like a real dialogue between two lovers.

Or with a friend.

Someone that the subject knows well.

Now that the string is known, the string is cut too.

The string is the capacity of the betrayal to hide the things.

Is the way with which he bonds the subject to him.

  One by one
One by one
It comes to us all
It’s as soft as your pillow

Here the end of the relationship between the two persons, is compared to the death.

Like the death gets everyone of us.

First or later.

In the same way every lie will be discovered.

First or later.

It’s simple, painless and fast.

Because the betrayal makes everything more simple.

When you discover it, all the things go to the right place.

You don’t need explaination.

You are from the right side of the world.

  Et cetera, et cetera
Facts for whatever
Fifteen steps
Then a sheer drop

Yes. we can talk for a lot of days and nights.

But it’s the same.

You can describe a lot of facts about the why and the where.

But all of this is useless.

When you betray, nothing else matters.

It’s the end of all.

Of the story.

Of the feelings.

And of the memories.

Yes. You need some time to understand all the things that happen.

But at the end.

This is the end.

And the sheer drop is the ultimate fact.

The execution of the story.

Of the relationship.

Of the person.

Everything that relates to him, stops and ends in that moment.

When you discover the lies.

And makes that last 15 steps.

Conclusion

A great song played live a lot of times during the show of Radiohead.
